Outdoor living space and an open floor plan are central to this urban residence. Designed for two university professors, this modern home is being constructed on a steeply sloping infill lot. The land falls away drastically from the street, creating a logistical challenge which required a creative architectural response. Rather than bringing in a lot of fill, we decided to work with the land by using minimal retaining walls to create a buildable pad one full story below street level. The result is a rather dramatic entry path leading from Pulaski Street to the front door along a bridge which spans the sunken courtyard below. A guest bedroom/office at the front of the home features its own balcony overlooking that same courtyard. The main living space is located on the upper level and organized around a vaulted living and dining room. Outdoor living can be accessed from the master bedroom, living room, kitchen and dining room on the upper level. The lower level includes a carport with parking for two cars, guest bedroom, workout area, den, and wine cellar with plentiful outdoor gathering space located in the intimate sunken courtyard and large rear yard.
